Exceptional 18th Century Tavern Settle with Witches Mark

£1,850.00

Height 91 cm
Width 184 cm
Depth 41 cm

An exceptional and highly original 18th Century pine tavern settle. Pegged construction and gently curved for extra stability it is still in its original paint, giving it a wonderful surface. The back is equally extraordinary and full of historic marks and graffiti, including a hexafoil to ward off evil spirits. Apotropaic, or witches marks, were occasionally carved into furniture as protection from malevolent spirits. The hexafoil, also known as a daisy wheel, was believed to trap such spirits within its pattern.

A fantastic and characterful piece of 18th Century furniture, with fascinating evidence of its history and the beliefs of the period.
