Welsh slate was and is used for building cottages and tiling roofs. The slate was dug out of the quarry and then a skilled craftsperson would split the slate to make it into thin sheets of rock that could be used as roof tiles. This chair was designed for them to do this on. There is a small groove just under the seat that helped keep the rock in place as they split it with a hammer. An important piece of Welsh history and fine craftmenship.
